The family had spent one night a week over the last five weeks gathered in this room with the others, working with different art forms and making a keepsake memory book. This night, at the end of the session, one daughter could not attend. The latest round of chemotherapy in her battle with leukemia compromised her immune system and made it too risky for her to be out in public. So her father and siblings dedicated their poem, and the family’s book, to her – their hero. Linda Eyermann was touched, as she so often is at these sessions, while listening to the father speak. Eyermann, director of education for the South Shore Arts Association, organizes the Making Memories family enrichment program, which has expanded to communities throughout Lake County through funding from the Legacy Foundation and other donors. There is no charge to the families who participate. “We live in a time where families are so busy that they simply don’t spend time together, which is why this is such a good program,” Eyermann said. “This program offers them a night out where they don’t have to fix food, they can focus on being a family together and experiencing different art forms.” Find out more about the local arts and cultural organizations and projects that you can support through the Legacy Foundation.
