SPOTLIGHT: Emerson School for the Visual and Performing Arts

Ten high-school students from Gary’s Emerson School for the Visual and Performing Arts stood near the Reflecting Pool on the National Mall on a wintry day in January 2009 day and learned history first-hand.

The students had the opportunity to attend the inauguration of President Barack Obama as part of the weeklong Close Up Academy, an experiential learning program that helps students understand the key role that they, as ordinary citizens, play as active participants in the U.S. democratic system.

Legacy Foundation joined with other local organizations to fund the students’ trip to Washington, D.C. and participation in the academy. Legacy also provided cameras, video equipment and software for the students to document their experiences.

“What a memory for them…to be in the presence of 2 million people…and witness the spirit of everybody gathered there,” said Steven Sutton, an art teacher at Emerson and sponsor of the Close Up program at the school. “This program makes kids better citizens.”
