SPOTLIGHT: Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral/Ross Township Food Pantry Friday mornings are a busy time at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral. The church operates the Ross Township Food Pantry, and on Fridays, Ross Township residents referred by the Trustee’s office come to pick up their food. Volunteers from the church staff the food pantry, which serves about 80 families each week or 15,600 people per year. The church managed to run the food pantry for 15 years from a cramped storage area. With demand up approximately 20 percent in 2009 due to the economic downturn, the church determined the need to expand the food pantry and set about raising $30,000 needed for renovations. Legacy Foundation contributed $10,000 to leverage a challenge grant from the Novak Family Foundation. Additional funds were raised from Order of AHEPA to complete the project. The expanded food pantry offers improved parking including handicapped spaces; well-organized displays of food and other items; shopping carts to assist clients while selecting their food; and new equipment for storage including a three-door stainless steel freezer. “The value of a community foundation is making projects like this happen,” said Bill Logothetis, the church’s council president. “I don’t think we would have found the funding if it were not for Legacy’s partnership.” Find out more about the local arts and cultural organizations and projects that you can support through the Legacy Foundation.
