SPOTLIGHT: Parents as Teachers of Lake County

There’s nothing like the excitement of a two-year-old backing up into your lap to hear a good book.

Parent educators with Parents as Teachers experience that joyful feeling in their work all the time. Most importantly, they share the value of reading and other activities with the parents of children from birth to age 5 right in their own homes.

Parents as Teachers of Lake County offers programs in communities from Whiting to Lowell. During 2009, the School City of Hobart sought to establish a program for families in that community.

Legacy Foundation granted $5,000 through the Lake County Literacy Fund to support the start-up. The Hobart program attracted 107 families with 135 children in its first six months.

“This has been one of the fastest-growing sites we’ve ever had,” said Kimberly Smith, executive director of Parents as Teachers of Lake County.
