Lake County Community Fund
This fund was established to be responsive to needs throughout Lake County and is dedicated to worthwhile community projects in the areas of arts and culture, civic affairs, community development, education, the environment, health, human services, and youth services. John S. & James L. Knight Foundation Donor-Advised Fund
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation announced that it will invest up to $2.5 million to foster an "informed, engaged" Gary community over the next seven years through Legacy Foundation.
The effort is part of Knight Foundation's $70 million Community Foundation Initiative, which will help deepen Knight Foundation's focus on ensuring that communities have the information they need to make decisions about their lives.
The new approach will modify how Knight Foundation works in the Gary area and other Knight communities. Grant seekers in Gary will apply for funding through Legacy Foundation. A new community foundation director in Knight's Miami headquarters will work with an advisory committee in Gary to guide the community foundations on how to use the funds. Nonprofits seeking Knight funding should contact Legacy Foundation, and ask about Knight Foundation's donor advised fund.

College Readiness Fund
In 2008, Legacy Foundation established this fund with a grant from Lumina Foundation for Education to improve high school graduation rates and increase the number of students that attend and succeed in college.
Lumina Foundation for Education is an Indianapolis-based, private foundation dedicated to expanding access in education beyond high school.
The purpose of the fund is to support Lake County organizations that help students gain academic skills needed to prepare for college and navigate the college application process. The College Readiness Fund is particularly interested in serving Lake County students from; Hammond, Lake Station, Gary and East Chicago who are low-income or are the first in their family to attend college. Legacy has defined college readiness as, services that help students gain academic skills needed to prepare for college. College access is defined as services that assist students and/or their families with the college application and entry process.
The College Readiness Fund considers organizations that clearly demonstrate college readiness or college access is a priority. These programs include, but not limited to, tutoring, mentoring, academic enrichment programs, college preparation assistance, before and after school care, college tours and visits, and academic or financial aid counseling. The organizations awarded grants in 2009 and 2010 from the College Readiness Fund have deployed TraxSolutions, a web based data collection and data sharing system, which is supported through the College Readiness Fund.
