Larimore adds a third gallon of milk, a second carton of eggs, and makes sure the woman has fresh vegetables and two loaves of bread for her three children. It’s not the regular distribution day at the Hobart Food Pantry, but Larimore, the executive director, knows the woman has just gone back to school to try to improve her family’s situation and might not make it back to pick up food later in the week. Legacy Foundation, through the Maria Reiner Senior Citizens Trust, granted $10,000 to the food pantry during 2009 to buy larger quantities of food to support increased demand due to the economic downturn that began in mid-2008. “The increase in clients has been overwhelming. Had it not been for the Legacy funding, we would have run out of food,” Larimore said. “It’s amazing the difference this food will make in people’s lives. That mom can come get food so she can go to school and her kids will be healthy, and senior (citizens) will have food so they don’t have to make a choice between food and prescription medication.” Find out more about the local health and human services organizations and projects that you can support through the Legacy Foundation. SPOTLIGHT: Hobart Family YMCA Senior citizens living in Hobart have better access to their doctors’ offices, the YMCA, even the beauty salon and bingo, thanks to the Legacy Foundation, the Maria Reiner Senior Citizens Trust and the Hobart YMCA.Responding to community need, Legacy Foundation granted $5,000 through the Maria Reiner fund to the YMCA to create the Hobart Senior Transportation Program. For just $1 per ride, qualified Hobart residents who register for the program can take a taxi anywhere they need to go within a 10-mile radius. The Reiner funds reimburse the YMCA for the cost of the rides beyond the $1. More than 120 Hobart seniors enrolled in the program in just its first four months in 2009, according to Dale Polomchak, the Y’s executive director. “I tell people they’re very fortunate to be a senior living in Hobart thanks to Maria Reiner’s gift,” Polomchak said.
