Mary Govert often says that in her job, she sees the worst actions people can do to one another and the best actions people can do to one another. The worst are the bruisesphysical and emotionalinflicted before women and children come into St. Jude House, the Crown Point shelter where Govert serves as executive director. The best is the help people offer to families who are trying to put their lives back together. The eight-bedroom facility serves about 500 women and children annually. Donations from the community supplement the organization’s budget. However, frequently people who donate goods think of young children not the teens and pre-teens who come to live in the shelter. A Legacy Foundation grant gave St. Jude House the ability to furnish a “Teen Room” with brightly colored video gaming chairs, a Wii and the popular Guitar Hero game. Here, youth can watch TV, play video games, do their homework on a computer all things they might be doing in their own living room. “The children who come here have seen and heard a lot and are the innocent victims of what has happened in their lives,” Govert said. “We work hard to try to bring some normalcy back into their lives.” Find out more about the local youth organizations and projects that you can support through the Legacy Foundation.
